UMBC Baseball Head Coach John Jancuska Signed to Four-Year Contract Extension Through 2011-2012 Season
BALTIMORE—UMBC baseball head coach John Jancuska, along with UMBC's men's soccer and swimming and diving coaches, has signed a four-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season, Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown announced recently.
With the completion of last year’s season, Jancuska became the longest tenured coach in UMBC Athletics’ history with 31 total seasons, surpassing longtime cross country and track and field coach Jim Pfrogner, who held his position for 30 years. Jancuska’s four-year contract will ensure that he has at least 35 years as the skipper of the Retrievers.
"For the past 31 years I have always been excited about UMBC baseball," Jancuska said. "I am as excited as ever about the future of our program. We have strong support from our administration and I believe that we are poised to compete for the America East Championship on a yearly basis."
Over those 31 years, the coach has amassed a total of 654 wins, the most ever by a coach in UMBC history, and has tallied 19 seasons with 20 or more wins, including this past season when he guided the Retrievers to 21 victories.

Baseball Completes Staff with Addition of Jimmy Jackson- Maryland Native Joins Rossi's Staff
September 15, 2008
Jimmy Jackson has been hired as assistant baseball coach at Siena effective immediately, as announced today by head coach Tony Rossi. Jackson will work primarily with Siena's catchers and outfielders.
"Jimmy will be a valuable member of our staff because of his experience in professional baseball," head coach Tony Rossi said. "He will be able to provide our student-athletes with some perspective and direction as to what it takes to succeed in college and make it to the next level."
Jackson played two years of independent professional baseball in the Frontier and Atlantic League after a standout collegiate career at Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia. He was a two-time First Team All Conference, All Region and Preseason All American selection as a pitcher at Shepherd where he still holds six school records.
Jackson has spent the last three years as the varsity pitching coach at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland. He coached 17 players who advanced to play in college, 10 of which were pitchers. Additionally, Jackson delivered private lessons over the last three years to over 20 collegiate athletes, eight who played at the Division I level.
Jackson has worked multiple camps over the last eight years for high schools, colleges and Cal Ripken Baseball.
In addition to working with the catchers and outfielders, Jackson will handle myriad of responsibilities related to the daily upkeep of the program.

Testimonial from a SOMD Baseball Parent:
|
Dear Coach Wargo:
I apologize for the lateness of this note. Sending our sincere thanks
and appreciation to you, your wife and staff/family as well as the visiting coaches. What a GREAT camp!!! I'm 100% sure the camp impacted our son's all-star try-out. For example, the session Matthew attended that was over an hour focusing on how to field a bunt! We are grateful.
Matthew Wilson (DOB: 10/24/93) had a wonderful experience at the 2008
SMB Summer Camp! He is looking forward to your next camp! Please add us to your mailing list for Winter Training.
The SMB camp was EXTREMELY organized, with stations always running on
time at an incredibly clean facility. Your coaches were out-standing, very
positive with the players and the speakers were motivating. Coach Skip
Bertman hit a grand slam with his focus on academics! He reached out to
these young men about life lessons while adding his encouragement to
have a "stick with it" attitude; Baseball is not an easy game.
Coach Wargo, you went above running a Baseball Camp. Over the top were
the seminars and concessions, catering the lunches and having sno-cones!
May seem simple but we realize what time it takes to organize such an event.
We also noted the care taken by your staff to keep all ages safely active
in the ALL stations without putting any of the younger kids at risk. Best
of luck and we'll see you soon!
Appreciatively,
(Again very late but most sincere.)
Cathy Wilson
PS WOW - forgot to mention...the young men running the mini-camp for
the little leaguers were extremely patient, kept the interest of the kids,
teaching new hitting/fielding skills while the kids were having FUN
for 3 straight days in the heat! Not an easy thing to do! My 5 yr old
Scottie was hanging @ the fence. He'll enjoy it next year! |

Gerjets' gem, late-inning runs lead Mason to win
Newark, Del. - Dan Gerjets had a masterful start for the Patriots on Sunday and the George Mason baseball team broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the eighth and then added insurance runs in the ninth as Mason defeated Delaware, 5-2 in Colonial Athletic Association action. With the win, Mason (22-21, 14-8) improved to better than .500 for the first time all season.
Gerjets (5-1) went eight and one-third innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out nine and taking a shutout into the ninth. In making his first start since being hit in the head by a batted ball on April 23, the sophomore retired the side five times and did not allow a runner past second until the ninth. From the fourth inning through the eighth, he retired 13 straight batters.

The Southern Maryland Baseball Camp
is an established and well-known instructional environment that
offers a tremendous opportunity for the student athlete who is
interested in pursuing college and professional baseball. For the
younger athlete, the camp provides a look into the future while
providing them with the best possible foundation for success
The importance of education, self discipline, and
substance abuse are addressed during the camp. We will also speak
with the parents and the athletes on making the best decision on
which college is right for them.
There is a close working relationship with the
colleges that attend our camp throughout the year. This
partnership is a valuable tool in helping place student athletes
at the University or College of their choice.
